Insomnia is a sleep condition where the individual affected suffers from lack of sleep. This lack of sleep stems from psychological and medical causes of insomnia. Although there are many psychological causes which may result in insomnia, the medical causes of insomnia may be few.

Medications Can Cause Insomnia

One of the medical causes of insomnia are medications and drugs which may b prescribed to the individual and even over the counter drugs, which the individual takes. Medication can be one of the causes of insomnia in children as well as adults. Some of the medications or drugs that can causes insomnia in some people are those with nicotine. Other medical causes of insomnia for some individuals are their usage of antidepressants, beta blockers and beta agonists. The effect of over the counter drugs and prescription medicine upon people may be varied. In other words, different people may have different reactions to a drug or medication, which suggests that insomnia may or may not result in people taking the same medicine.

Medical Conditions

Some medical conditions have also been pinpointed as some of the medical causes of insomnia in people. These medical conditions include hyperthyroidism, Parkinson’s disease, allergies, asthma, hypertension, arthritis and heart disease. Of course, some medical causes of insomnia will also include the onset of pain and discomfort caused by injuries and other conditions which manifest pain or discomfort in the person. A tingling feeling which need not be painful may also prevent a person from enjoying a good night’s rest. 

Sleep apnea is also another of the many different medical causes of insomnia. Sleep apnea is a condition or breathing disorder which is characterized by a short cessasion of an individual’s breathing during sleep. When this occurs, the body will gasp for breath and as a result, the person may awake. Another of the medical causes of insomnia is known as restless leg syndrome. The aforementioned medical causes of insomnia are outnumbered by the possible psychological causes. The medical causes of insomnia may be easier to deal with than the psychological causes of the sleep disorder. There are also cases of the medical causes of insomnia being difficult to resolve since the underlying medical reason or condition needs to be dealt with to free the individual from the disorder.
