Everyone struggles with sleeping sometimes. When it happens to you, you probably wonder why. The trouble is that there are lots of insomnia causes that could be affecting you. There are a lot of mental or physical issues, for example, that can create a sleeping problem. It can also be caused by outside factors and distractions. Also, consider the fact that, many times, insomnia is caused by a combination of things, not just one thing. So, let’s examine some of those things now.

Hormones can play a huge part in whether you do or do not sleep well at night. That’s why women tend to have a bigger problem than men do with sleep. Pregnancy or menopause can throw the hormone balance out of whack. That can mean a lot less sleep at night.

Age can also be a physical cause for insomnia. You see, your body produces hormones, like melatonin, that help you sleep. With age, though, melatonin production decreases. Less sleep hormones means, of course, less sleep. Don’t overlook a natural sleep remedy when you’re suffering the effects of insomnia.

Of course, physical ailments can also play a big part in sleep problems. Arthritis and Parkinson’s Disease, for instance, can contribute to insomnia. Other causes can include acid reflux and sleep apnea, which is a condition where you stop breathing for short bursts while you sleep.

When you look at psychological causes for insomnia, general stress is right up there on the list. Worrying about something coming up the next day, like a big meeting at work, can be one cause of stress-related insomnia. It’s also possible that you’re just stressed all the time. If so, you could have insomnia trouble all the time.

Panic attacks or general anxiety over a specific situation that pops up often can also cause insomnia. Getting shots at the doctor’s office, for instance, is one example of that. So, you could have a seriously hard time sleeping before such things take place.

Another source of insomnia trouble is clinical depression. It can be hard to sleep, after all, when you are feeling discouraged or sad.

As if all that weren’t enough, then there are the temporary causes. One can be what you eat and drink. Anything containing sugar or caffeine can keep you awake at night, as can alcohol.

Medications, jet lag and distractions like loud noises or bright lights are also insomnia causes. So, the next time you have trouble sleeping at night, try turning off the lights and the TV and tuning out the world a bit. It can make all the difference in the world, as far as getting the rest you need and deserve.
